Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), located at Valiamala, Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala assumes great significance for being the first university in Asia dedicated to the study and research of Outer space. It has the status of a Deemed University specializing in the study and research of space science.
IIST was set up by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) under the Department of Space, Government of India. Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, was also the Chancellor of IIST.
IIST offers undergraduate (B.Tech), master’s (M.Tech) and Ph.D. programs in space science and technology, and also serves as a research centre for Doctoral programs in basic sciences and post-doctoral programs.
The institute also offers 5-year Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech/M.S) in Engineering Physics. The M.Tech/M.S can be done in any of the following – M.S. in Astronomy & Astrophysics, M.Tech in Earth System Science, M.Tech in Machine learning and computing, M.Tech in Geoinformatics, M.Tech in Aerodynamics & Flight Mechanics, M.Tech in Structures and Design, M.Tech in Thermal and Propulsion, M.Tech in Control Systems, M.Tech in Digital Signal Processing.
The seats are, however, limited to 20 in the dual degree program from the existing 36 in Physical Sciences. 60 students each are admitted to the Aerospace and Avionics branches.

In the prestigious and widely acclaimed educational ranking of Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF- 2021), IISST at 10th Rank in IIRF Deemed University Ranking 2021.
